Hey friends, it has been a long time! Such is the busy life (noooo).

I have been notified that imgur will be culling images from anonymous uploads. So far I can confirm that the thumbnails are in an account...but I can't find where I put the images USED in the layouts themselves. Not all layouts use files I uploaded in imgur.

I have saved these images as a back up just in case, but because I have been very busy, it will take an indefinite amount of time to switch out whatever needs to be switched. If we're lucky, I already have those files in an account and I just need to find them.

For now, I recommend saving the images if you are using them in your layout, just in case things go south. If anything does break, leave comments so I know which to target when I can get to it.

Hi everyone!

I've just been notified that all my layouts do not work if you use them anew (editing an existing one should be fine as long as it's not a fresh copy.) I can't tell what's wrong either because my internet is broken right now since Australia is terrible when it comes to internet.

Bear with me as I will look at it after net returns, since I'll need a desktop environment for this. Sorry everyone. :(

All good now! It was due to new functionality, which you can read about here that involves using @ to call user accounts from dreamwidth and external sites.

For example, @ tofuhouse without the space looks like tofuhouse.

For external sites, it would be @username.site

@granbluefantasy.twitter = granbluefantasy
@GOODSMILECOMPANY.plurk = GOODSMILECOMPANY

To ensure this doesn't autoformat just stick a \ in front of the @

Since this autoformats, say if you're using <code> or <textarea>, you'll need to put a \ in front of it.

Example

@granbluefantasy.twitter without a \ in front of it.

It's autoformatted.

@granbluefantasy.twitter with a \ in front of it.

Only stuff like font_face and media have exceptions, and if you have anything the @ it should also be okay, like email@email.com

I'm not sure of the status of what would happen if within code/textarea/etc

Also this doesn't work on profiles (learnt this the long way).

This is an icon set by Google with its own self hosted icons in Google Fonts, making this the perfect substitute for FontAwesome for use in Dreamwidth Layouts since you do not need a host, and they have a library of references ready for use.

My CSS might not be 100% right now because I haven't put this into actual practical use yet, just been testing on old layouts. I'm also unsure if it calls everything but we'll see.

So this post is a Work In Progress, but I'm posting because if others need a head start on testing it out, feel free to. I will try to update it cos I have layouts that are already Material Icons ready, but good lord do I lack time.

UPDATE: Dreamwidth's Responsiveness, now fixed

Hey team, long time no post! This is all because it got WILDLY BUSY in my life and then I forgot how to code (wait).

Anyway, with the latest code push (30 April 2019, or my 1 May 2019), custom styles no longer strip the viewport meta tag, meaning that it's possible to code mobile responsive layouts without need to check the box "Use layout's stylesheet(s)" in custom CSS.

However, any custom layout prior to 30 April 2019 that has the box unchecked still is not mobile responsive if they haven't already coded media CSS into the stylesheets. But! This means that moving forward, everyone can, or those layouts can have code added to them to ensure that they are mobile responsive without need of a full rehaul.

What does this mean for my current layouts, because I use the checkbox hack to get them mobile responsive? At the moment nothing, because I have to do a full rehaul if anything. However, I'll look into a few things to see what I can do, but currently no promises only because of time.

I will be updating Basic Layout Coding Notes to reflect the updates in due time, because I want to mess around with testing the code first.

Meanwhile, some helpful links:

UPDATE 2: Actually, the default Tectonic layout has some weird floating occurring. I'm asking the team about this before I update codes, so watch this space.

This actually came around because a while back, a friend had trouble with Google and it's like WHAT WE WILL DO!! Well, there's a few options out there! This list compiles the one I have used and really like.

Note that these don't talk about Yahoo or Bing or etc, because we already know those.

And how to make them function like Firefox and Chrome. This is here for people who find that Firefox and Chrome's functions might not be suitable for them, but don't know where to start! In no means does this mean that Firefox and Chrome are bad, cos they do update frequently. But sometimes you just want more variety because of (insert a reason here.) Reasons are usually Chrome being a total privacy hack (oh yeah I went there). Also, Chrome will be turning off adblock support for anything but Adblock Plus for non-enterprise, which actually whitelists ads already so it's not a true adblocker. It makes sense for Chrome because it's a business decision, but for those who want to use it on their own terms (for free), then continue on.

If you want your browsers to function like FF or Chrome and be able to use their add-ons and extensions, then this list is here 4 u. Note that this is made with Dreamwidth usage in mind, and also that my add-ons/extensions aren't the same as yours. This is just a resource list.

Recently, phone browsers has been added too. Once again, a resource list.

Phone Browsers

NOTE: With Dreamwidth's updates, the bottom stuff is becoming less and less relevant. Basically just pick the safest mobile browser (spoilers: In this list? It's Firefox. The importance of add-ons.)

So the reason why this is here is because of the importance of responsive browsers on your phone. Dreamwidth is not a responsive site if you use the default skins and not the layouts (where they're all responsive). As such, we need to kick out Chrome for being the default on Android. Also Chrome's a pretty terrible phone browser anyway, there are many out there that are good.

So what would be the options for Mobile Browsing in a Dreamwidth world? Anything with Text-Wrap/Reflow. What the hell is Text-Wrap or Text Reflow? Basically, it crams and sometimes resizes all your text into the screen properly, making sure it flows naturally when you read or zoom in. Meaning you don't have to keep swiping side to side just to read your entire page.

Sadly, there are only two browsers in existence (at the time of me writing this) that still have it.

This post will be constantly updated because of new developments. And maybe if more new browsers crop up (but I'll only put up ones I feel are pretty decent alternatives, so should be long-lived at least!). Feel free to make some suggestions with how you got it working like the above.

A few of my friends have recently gotten into Dreamwidth, but without having been in blogging sites before. Dreamwidth itself is a pretty special kind of blogging platform that is different to the likes of Wordpress, in that it has a way better subscription service and community tool than Wordpress. It's more focused on building communities around blogging. If you've used Livejournal before (or still are), you're pretty good to go. If you've only been on microblogs, then this is for You. I'm just gonna go through really basic stuff. It gets easier in the finer details after. It's way easy to get into this site, and way convenient!

I'm compiling a list of things I went through, tips, etc for getting started on coding a layout in Dreamwidth. It seems daunting at first, but actually it's not half bad. In fact, it's much easier for me to pick up on than it was while I was back at Livejournal. Whoa! (I was really bad at livejournal layouts, so this is actually saying something.)

This will also help with editing pre-existing custom codes already available for your use (should the original creator allow it) so that the layout will be tailored to you! This also answers one question: why the heck do I always overlap on another stylesheet instead of making one from scratch?

--- NOTE2: There's a bug with Google Calendar and Dreamwidth right now, but support has a workaround for now:
1. Copy/Paste the embed code.
2. Change the beginning of the url: From "https://calendar.google.com/calendar/rest_of_url_here..." to "https://www.google.com/calendar/rest_of_url_here..."
This should work most of the time until they fix the bugs.

GOOGLE DOCS/SHEETS/SLIDES/ETC
Instructions here in Wordpress's FAQ (wait what). Yes it's practically exactly the same. I tested it with Google Docs, I haven't tested it on Sheets or Slides or whatever else is available yet.

PLURK WIDGET
Go to "Customize Profile" or "Profile Settings", and then Widget (or use that link). After that, choose your options and then copy/paste the code into a post.
--- NOTE: It's useless if your timeline is on private cos the plurks won't show up, just a note saying that your settings are on private. I tested it with a public and private account and they both work (aside from private being switched off).
--- NOTE2: It uses div codes, BUT you can actually put the widget onto your profile. Somehow it still works and I ain't complaining.

MUZICONS
Go here, customise, copy/paste code into post/profile. Works for both, you can see it in action on this comm's profile.

VINE
Go to Vine, pick the Vine you want to embed, click "Embed", choose your size options and etc, and just copypaste the code into a post. To embed, see the vertical line of dots for the menu, it's got the option there, or from something that looks like < >.
--- It also works on profiles.

8TRACKS
After you pick an 8tracks you like, click any variation of "Share", and then over to find "Embed Player" (could look like < > ). Choose your options, copy/paste the code, slap it into a post or profile, it works in both.

DAILYMOTION
Click "Export" and there's an embed code. Choose options and then just copy and paste here in a post or profile.

VIMEO
Click on Share (which could also look like that paper airplane thing on the video) and then copy the embed code before pasting into a post or profile!

NOTE: Two things at the moment! Since end of November 2015:
- If you use Beta posting, the site embed code will vanish even if the code is working. You can hit edit and save, and the code will still work even if it vanished. Yes strange.
- ~~Google Calendar isn't working for new embeds (it does for old ones?) It looks like no one knows why so support tickets will have to be sent in this case.~~ UPDATE: Look at Google Calendar embed method up there for the workaround provided by Dreamwidth support while the bugs are being fixed.

dreamwidth is having a lot more layouts lately, but I never remember the names of the ones I like (or the colours) so I'm compiling it here so that my lazy self can remember which ones I do look at.
